Why Tunisia?
Star Wars tourism remains one of Tunisia’s untapped national treasures. Located in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia is inextricably linked to the genesis of the Star Wars universe and distinguished as the country with the second most number of unique Star Wars film sites (12 total). Spread across more than some 500 kilometers of diverse geography and climate in southern Tunisia, the sites were collectively used to film a myriad of iconic Tatooine scenes in four of the Skywalker saga live-action movies: A New Hope (1977), The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005). Separate third-party footage from Tunisia was utilized in the live-action series The Mandalorian, Chapter 5: “The Gunslinger” (2019).
Tunisian architecture, landscape, and names/references are ubiquitous in Star Wars canon. Fictional Tatooine in many respects is a direct reflection of Tunisia. No other real-world destination offers the same level of organic immersion into the Star Wars universe. Beyond the franchise connection, Star Wars locations in the country are innately visit-worthy due to their inherent value as essential Tunisian cultural landmarks.
Tunisia is also synonymous with Indiana Jones tourism. An assortment of film sites (5 total)—spanning from an oasis date palm orchard, remote canyon, and dirt roads near phosphate mines in southern Tunisia to the Kairouan medina and Sousse port in central Tunisia—were used to produce extensive footage set in both Egypt and Greece for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). In many ways the visuals, dialogue, and stunts shot in Tunisia set the tone for the entire Indiana Jones franchise.
